Owls are the king of the night sky. The great Horned Owls are large, weighting up to 4 ½ pounds and having a wingspan of 4 feet. They fly absolutely silently facilitated by loose, soft outer edge flight feathers that allow air to rush by without making a sound.

Although I live on a remote mountain covered with old growth oaks and madrones and open grasslands, full of small rodents and other tasty owl treats; I seldom see owls. When they swoop out of the night sky, their size and silence make my heart leap. Owl-sightingsare special and therefore memorable.

Owls symbolize inner wisdom, change or transformation, intuitive development, and self-actualization.

Native Americans believe the owl is the spirit of a deceased ancestor, representing the energy of the wise elder.

In Japanese and Chinese culture, owls symbolize good fortune and protection.

In ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, the owl was regarded as the gatekeeper of the underworld.

The moon phases symbolize immortality and eternity, enlightenment. The moon controls the tides, rains, the waters and the seasons, reflecting inner knowledge and mans condition on earth.
