The Lionfish icon is an exploration of light in water and sea grass coupled with the balance vs. counter-balance found in nature’s food chain.

The outrageous Lionfish, Pterois, is a venomous marine fish native to the Indo-Pacific. This extraordinary fish has a colorful warning system to protect itself from it’s predators. However, the Lionfish feeds on the herbivores that eat algae from the coral reefs, which can be detrimental to the health of the fragile coral reefs.

Natural phenomena like hurricanes and changing water temperatures can endanger kelp forest communities. Just as easily an imbalance of the sea urchin population can destroy the kelp forests.

The beauty of our oceans and its inhabitants holds the secrets of balance and accord. We are compelled to observe and wonder.
